No Rehearsals Rock Tierney's to Help Former Foster Kids This Friday, June 14th
Parents Who Rock's Alma Schneider and her band, The No Rehearsals, will be performing Friday, June 14, to benefit 10 college students who have placed out of the New Jersey foster care system.
The benefit show will take place at Tierney’s Tavern, 136-138 Valley Road in Montclair, and will start at 9 p.m. Admission is $10. All money raised will go to help out the students. Donations of gift cards, cash and non-perishable food will be accepted at the show.
Many Montclair residents and businesses are stepping forward to help out the students, who moved into dorms at Montclair State University this week, thanks to a program called Summer Housing Internship Program (S.H.I.P. ) They will live on campus through the middle of August, and will take a three-credit leadership course while they are there.
In addition, the students will have the opportunity to participate in multiple academic and recreational activities, including internships in their areas of study.
The students will receive stipend benefits and a brown-bagged lunch each day. Other basic needs, such as toiletries, work-appropriate clothing, groceries and school supplies, are sorely needed, and that’s where Montclair residents are stepping in and helping out.
Steve Matthews, a Realtor at Prudential New Jersey Properties in Montclair, has helped set up drop-off sites for donations for the students throughout town, including Prudential, Keller Williams Realty, Stanton Company Realtors, Coldwell Banker, the West Essex Board of Realtors, Frederic Goodman Jewelers and Mahir's Barber Shop in Montclair. Suggested donations include gift cards in increments of $50 or less to stores like Macy’s, The Gap and Target for clothing, as well as CVS and local supermarkets for personal needs and groceries.
“People are always looking for ways to volunteer,” Schneider said. “If you are giving $50 to $100, you know this kid is going to eat for a week.” So come out to the show, donate to a great cause, and listen to some rocking music.
